Threads: Legends Lore

Benny Blane was a schoolyard legend, taking all that life had to offer. He lived on another plane, his aura exciting and free.

I asked his plans in life: “To be an imaginista.”

Decades later, I find him in McKinney.

“Spent three years as park ranger, mostly smoking ganja. Taught English in Japan then toured entire Pacific rim. Met a French woman and learned to paint in southern France. Painted in Santa Fe. Now hiding out here.”

“You did everything!”

“Everything but love. What a waste.”

He’s a few years older than me but overlapped one year at church camp. Some of the counselors were walking around our dorm one night shining a flashlight on the ground. We wondered what they were up to. Benny dryly remarked, “They’re looking for footprints.”
