In “American Gigolo” there’s a haunting scene where Julian is renting a Pinto. His high-flying life has fallen apart, trading his Mercedes and swank apartment while on the run from the police and a murder frame.
What’s easy to miss is an exotic Maserati Khamsin in the left corner. This was the director’s personal dream car that he included as a contrast that while Julian’s dream is over, others are still living theirs, perhaps in a more honest way that doesn’t require a day of reckoning.
